What You Need To Know About Bumpy Teeth

Bumpy teeth are quite an unusual thing to have, but it's not unheard of. People with this condition typically start to develop it in childhood, and it can follow them all the way through adulthood. If you have bumpy teeth and you're tired of hearing comments about them or just feel self-conscious about it, there is something you can do. Here's how a cosmetic dentist can help you through this problem.

How It Happens

The first thing you should know is that this is typically only a cosmetic problem, so your teeth shouldn't be in any real danger. The condition is called fluorosis.

Fluorosis is a condition that develops while you're still a child. If you use a lot of fluoride products while caring for your teeth, drinking fluoridated water, and potentially swallow some of your toothpaste or other fluoridated products, you might develop fluorosis.

Under normal circumstances the fluoride you consume sort of becomes part of your tooth, which is how it helps to make it stronger. But if you have too much of it as a child, the tooth can end up having too much fluoride inside of it and becomes bumpy and irregular as a result. Unfortunately there's no way to reverse this condition once you're an adult, but that doesn't mean that there isn't a way to make it more normal.

What to Do About It

If you know or suspect that you have a fluorosis, a cosmetic dentist is who you want to see to have it fixed.

Cosmetic dentists go through all the same training as general dentists and then some additional on top of it in order to provide their services, so you're in good hands. Your cosmetic dentist will first examine your teeth visually and with x-rays to ensure that they're healthy. If so, you can start towards the beautification process immediately.

To do this, your dentist will likely recommend dental veneers. Dental veneers are thin layers of porcelain that sit on the front of your teeth, attached with dental cement. They give the appearance of white, straight, and even-looking teeth with a slick smooth surface like normal, healthy teeth naturally have. This is a non-invasive process and generally one that can be accomplished in just a couple visits to your dentist's office.

If you're tired of having bumpy-looking teeth, then it's time to do something about it. Get help from a cosmetic dentist, such as those found at The Smile Architects, and put the past behind you.
